AP TRENDS & PREDICTIONS

Where AI Agents Actually Start Being Useful Between AP and AR

By:

I have been fairly vocal about my skepticism toward how much of the industry has relabeled itself around AI without actually changing what is happening underneath. So I want to be just as direct about where I think the technology genuinely earns its place, because the honest version of this story has two sides.

Start with something as unglamorous as a supplier statement. A supplier sends one in, and your AP system reconciles it. That part is not new. What is new, and genuinely useful, is what happens after the reconciliation finds a gap. Say you are missing three invoices that the supplier's statement shows but your system never received. Today, that usually means someone on your team sends an email and waits. In the near future, and in some cases already, that reconciliation can trigger an agent on your side to reach out directly to an agent on the supplier's side, ask for those specific three invoices, and pull them back into your system automatically, where they start working through your normal automation instead of sitting in an inbox.

That is a small example, but it points at something bigger. A huge share of what AP sends out every day is some version of the same handful of messages. Here is your invoice status. I need these three documents. This PO changed. Here is a short payment and why. Most of that traffic does not require judgment. It requires retrieval and a clear answer, which is exactly the kind of work agents talking to agents can take over, freeing up actual people to deal with the exceptions that do require judgment.

I think this goes further than two systems quietly exchanging documents in the background, too. We are already seeing the beginning of this show up in tools like MCP servers, where I can be away from my desk and ask an AI assistant directly to flip a PO, check a dispute, or pull status on an invoice, and have it gather that information for me in real time rather than waiting until I am back at a terminal with the right portal open.

None of this replaces the relationship between a buyer and a supplier. It replaces the parts of that relationship that were never really a relationship to begin with, the status checks and document chasing that both sides have always treated as overhead. What I want people to take from this is not that AI will magically fix supplier engagement. It is that there is a real, specific, almost boring use case sitting right in front of us, the basic emails AP has been sending on autopilot for years, and that is exactly the kind of work worth automating first. Save the judgment calls for people. Let the agents handle the status updates nobody wanted to be writing in the first place.
